Week #1—Improv (of Jehanne Dubrow’s Nonessential Equipment)

Excess Baggage

The cats and I were not hired by the company
and will not be going away with you. Forget
all who need you here. You shouldn’t take
our picture albums, which might remind you
of our good times together. You only need tech
gadgets—iPhone, laptop—and a Tom Clancy novel.
You wouldn’t want to weigh yourself down
with promises, expectations, responsibility—
so burdensome to you now—and distracting.
The lighter you pack the sooner you go.
Not the destination—only the departure matters.
You never meant to love us anyway.
